    On the invertibility of "rectangular" bi-infinite matrices and applications in time--frequency analysis

    Finite dimensional matrices having more columns than rows have no left inverses while those having more rows than columns have no right inverses. We give generalizations of these simple facts to bi--infinite matrices and use those to obtain density results for pp--frames of time--frequency molecules in modulation spaces and identifiability results for operators with bandlimited Kohn--Nirenberg symbols

    The classical sampling theorem for bandlimited functions has recently been generalized to apply to so-called bandlimited operators, that is, to operators with band-limited Kohn-Nirenberg symbols. Here, we discuss operator sampling versions of two of the most central extensions to the classical sampling theorem. In irregular operator sampling, the sampling set is not periodic with uniform distance. In multi-channel operator sampling, we obtain complete information on an operator by multiple operator sampling outputs

    We consider the problem of recovering a matrix from its action on a known vector in the setting where the matrix can be represented efficiently in a known matrix dictionary. Connections with sparse signal recovery allows for the use of efficient reconstruction techniques such as Basis Pursuit (BP). Of particular interest is the dictionary of time-frequency shift matrices and its role for channel estimation and identification in communications engineering. We present recovery results for BP with the time-frequency shift dictionary and various dictionaries of random matrices

    City-regionalism as a politics of collective provision : regional transport infrastructure in Denver, USA

    The rise of the city-region concept has focused attention on the nature of territorial politics underpinning city-regionalism. This paper investigates the relationship between territorial politics, city-regionalism and the collective provision of mass transport infrastructure in the USA. It deploys a case study of the Denver region, examining the state and governance structures driving forward FasTracks, a long-term project to expand the Denver Regional Transportation District’s light and commuter rail system. FasTracks represents a programme to retrofit the Denver city-region for integrated mass transit but its funding has fostered tensions around new regionalist governance arrangements. The paper uses the findings of the case study to reflect upon the balance of bottom–up versus top–down geopolitical forces shaping the landscape of city-regionalism in the USA. It emphasises the variety of ways in which struggles around infrastructure provision shape the emergence of new city-regionalist structures inside the competition state

    Platelet kinetics in the pulmonary microcirculation in vivo assessed by intravital microscopy

    Growing evidence supports the substantial pathophysiological impact of platelets on the development of acute lung injury. Methods for studying these cellular mechanisms in vivo are not present yet. The aim of this study was to develop a model enabling the quantitative analysis of platelet kinetics and platelet-endothelium interaction within consecutive segments of the pulmonary microcirculation in vivo. New Zealand White rabbits were anesthetized and ventilated. Autologous platelets were separated from blood and labeled ex vivo with rhodamine 6G. After implantation of a thoracic window, microhemodynamics and kinetics of platelets were investigated by intravital microscopy. Velocities of red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets were measured in arterioles, capillaries and venules, and the number of platelets adhering to the microvascular endothelium was counted. Kinetics of unstimulated platelets was compared with kinetics of thrombin-activated platelets. Velocity of unstimulated platelets was comparable to RBC velocity in all vessel segments. Unstimulated platelets passed the pulmonary microcirculation without substantial platelet-endothelial interaction. In contrast, velocity of activated platelets was decreased in all vascular segments indicating platelet margination and temporal platelet-endothelium interaction. Thrombin-activated platelets adhered to arteriolar endothelium; in capillaries and venules adherence of platelets was increased 8-fold and 13-fold, respectively. In conclusion, using intravital microscopy platelet kinetics were directly analyzed in the pulmonary microcirculation in vivo for the first time. In contrast to leukocytes, no substantial platelet-endothelium interaction occurs in the pulmonary microcirculation without any further stimulus. In response to platelet activation, molecular mechanisms enable adhesion of platelets in arterioles and venules as well as retention of platelets within capillaries. Copyright (C) 2002 S.
